Around the World in 80 Carats
Oren Sagee is the Founder and Owner of Ideal Stones Custom Jewellery Toronto. He brings over 10 years of international studies and customer service experience to the specialty diamond and gemstone industry.
Oren’s first interest in rocks and minerals began while completing his Bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences at The University of British Columbia in 2002. During this time he had the unique opportunity to learn about the Earth’s processes both in the classroom and in the field. His program took him from daily lectures into the heart of the B.C. Interior, the forested peaks of Vancouver Island, and as far as the towering volcanoes of Maui and the Big Island of Hawai’i.
For his next stop, Oren had his eye on the metropolis of Toronto so he could further his studies in the field of gemstones at the Canadian Gemmological Association. He successfully completed the Advanced Diploma of Gemmology program in 2004 with top honours and earned the designation of FCGmA (Fellow of the Canadian Gemmological Association).
After years of study, Oren decided it was time for some real-world work experience and left Canada behind to enter the fast paced jewellery retail environment of the Caribbean. An entire year in the sun drenched Riviera Maya of Mexico helped him apply theoretical skills obtained from his studies to practical situations and resulted in a successful adventure abroad. It was difficult to leave this paradise of palm trees and coconuts but Oren had already set his sights on his next destination: Antwerp, Belgium.
In Antwerp, Oren found himself back in the classroom, this time to focus his expertise specifically on diamonds and diamond grading. Committing his summer to a full-time program at the HRD Antwerp Institute of Gemmology he was able to meet international colleagues with interests similar to his own. Study and travel helped to fill in the blanks and Oren achieved the title of Certified Diamond Grader in 2005 with top honours. This internationally recognized diploma gave him the skills and tools he needed to enter the Canadian diamond industry.
Back in Canada after an exciting journey, Oren returned to Toronto and followed his passion by continuing to work within the diamond and jewellery trade. He gained more knowledge and experience while working for highly respected jewellery retailers and diamond wholesalers; holding positions such as Sales Specialist, Diamond Specialist, and Office Manager. In 2013, Oren’s love for the trade and strong background in the industry encouraged him to found Ideal Stones.
